St Raphael’s Hospice Sponsored Midnight Memories Walk 2009
Why we are walking?
Our Target for this walk is £60,000 including Gift Aid, and this money will go towards the running costs of the Hospice’s Day Care Centre.
To run the Day Care Centre and all its services at St Raphael’s costs around £80,000 per year.
The Centre provides very important support for patients living in the community. Currently open 4 days a week, this lovely bright Centre can host up to 60 patients a week. Using the volunteer car service and the hospice minibus, patients can visit and spend time with each other, talk to staff and volunteers, and experience alternative therapies which help with relaxation and give a feeling of wellbeing. They also have access to hairdressing and manicure services, take part in arts and crafts and enjoy visiting entertainers.
The aim of the Day Care Centre is to create an environment of understanding, enjoyment and safety within a social, therapeutic, spiritual and medically supportive framework. It enables patients to have their symptoms managed on a weekly basis, to meet with others who are at or who have been at the same stage of their disease journey and to feel safe about who they are and how they feel. It also provides an important breathing space for both the patients and carers at home
In short, the Day Care Centre provides people with a focus away from their illness, but always under the care of trained staff and is an integral part of St Raphael’s
